Traveling Gluten Free - Montenegro

For the last 10 days myself and the husband have been in sunny Montenegro. If you are on a special diet then going abroad and trying to ensure restaurants stick to your diet can be tricky. Montenegro has a Mediterranean menu, but even though there is some pizza and pasta, there is also loads of seafood, pork steaks and salads, perfect for me. The sight of huge fresh donuts being sold on the beach nearly overcame me on the pastry front though, there are lots of nice bakery products available.

I think I messed up a couple of times, as I may have eaten a fillet of sole that had been floured before it was fried (the fishy is pictured on this post, with some yummy lobster friends!), and a meal in Albania played havoc with my digestion for 24 hours, though there was nothing I could identify as the culprit, so maybe my fish just wasn't that fresh and my delicate tummy rebelled. It didn't taste that good at the time, thinking back, though I hope the cat I fed most of my fish to fared better than I did the next day!

As my symptoms are bearable if I make a mistake I don't ask at every restaurant to ensure they don't cross contaminate my meal, and also I don't enjoy the fuss that I feel I have made. If you do suffer badly if you even eat a little of what you are allergic to its worth learning how to voice your problems in the local language, and even print yourself a little card with what you are trying to describe in all local languages for your trip. Celiac Travel have a set of little cards you can print for the language you need and take with you in your wallet, very useful! I learnt 'ne hvala' to turn down any bread offered, perfect.

On the way home we stopped for a chicken kebab at the husbands favourite kebab shop in Manchester. They were lovely there, informing me the only things they sold in the shop with wheat in are the nan bread and chapatis. It was lovely to have some 100% gram flour onion bhajis, and chicken kebab, all the salad and dressings, but served in a tray instead of on nan bread, yum yum yum.

So what for dinner tonight I wonder? The husband is going to have a think and take us to the supermarket when he gets back, so we can cook up a traditional Gluten Free Baby dinner now we are back home in our lovely GF kitchen. Can't wait!
